Origin story

True Redact started with one practical PDF problem.

I needed a fast way to redact large documents while staying in control of what was removed. The answer became a product built around a simple standard: sensitive content should be removed from the PDF, not merely hidden from view.

Redaction pass

Detect

Find likely PII.

Remove

Strip the source content.

Export

Return a clean PDF.

How it began

Built from the workflow that was missing.

The job

A large document needed redacting quickly.

The starting point was practical: too many pages, too much sensitive information, and not enough time to mark every name, email, phone number, address, and reference by hand.

The gap

Existing tools slowed the work down.

Manual redaction was slow. Enterprise tools were heavy or expensive. Some PDF workflows only hid text visually, leaving hidden content inside the file.

The test

AI could identify sensitive details, but the PDF still had to be rebuilt properly.

The useful part was fast detection. The hard part was turning those detections into a PDF where sensitive content is removed from the underlying document, not just covered.

The product

True Redact became the pipeline built around that idea.

Detect the sensitive content, map it back to the document, remove the original content, rebuild the output, and give people simple controls for the things they already know must disappear.

What the product is built to protect

True Redact is intentionally practical: fast enough for real document work, careful enough for sensitive files, and direct enough that users stay in control.

Remove, not hide

The goal is a redacted PDF where sensitive content is stripped from the exported file, with visible marks showing what was removed.

Use AI where it helps

AI is used to accelerate detection across messy real-world documents, especially where rigid rules and manual passes miss context.

Keep human control

Custom terms and category controls let users force known names, dates, places, references, and other terms into the redaction pass.

Why AI belongs here

Redaction is repetitive, but judgment still matters.

AI is good at scanning text that would take a person a long time to review line by line. It can spot names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, organizations, dates, account references, and other details at a pace manual review cannot match.

True Redact continues after detection. The redaction pipeline maps what was found back to the PDF and produces a new output file, while custom terms give users a direct way to force specific words or phrases into the removal pass.

That is the origin of the name: true redaction, not visual masking.
